At midnight, Henry and Halle kiss and tell each other how happy they are to be together.

Chapter 32 Summary: “Henry”

Henry encourages Halle to go to the doctor when she gets sick. Since she won’t go, he drives her to his moms’ house. Halle is nervous to meet Henry’s mama Maria, but Maria is kind and welcoming. She gives Halle a checkup and assures them Halle’s condition isn’t serious.

In the car afterward, Halle tells Henry more about her familial relationships. Halle explains the responsibilities she took on as the eldest daughter and the ways her friendship with Will helped her at the time.

Chapter 33 Summary: “Halle”

After Halle gets better, she notices how stressed Henry is about hockey. She’s particularly worried about him because he’s playing Will’s team in the upcoming game. Halle’s family is coming into town for the event and Henry’s worried about meeting them, too. They spend the afternoon talking and Henry paints to calm down. He then suggests that they paint each other naked and have sex on a large canvas.

After Halle and Henry clean up, Halle goes home. She’s shocked to discover her and Will’s families have arrived early.

Chapter 34 Summary: “Halle”

Halle feels overwhelmed seeing Will and their families. She texts her friends about the situation and they wish her luck. Halle goes into the bathroom to hide her condoms so no one discovers she’s having sex.

She runs into Will in the hall and he bullies her about having a new boyfriend and changing who she is to be with him. They get into an argument. Halle tells Will how she really feels about their relationship and breakup. Afterward, Will leaves and Halle tries to deal with her family. Her mom finds Henry’s sketchbooks and remarks on how many drawings are of Halle.

Chapter 35 Summary: “Henry”

Henry feels overwhelmed anticipating the game. In the locker room, he and Will get into an altercation when Will makes rude remarks about Halle, her body, and sex. Henry stands up for Halle and Will lunges at him. Bobby intercedes and starts fighting Will. Henry gets hit during the scuffle.

Coach enters and takes Henry aside, blaming him for what happened. He demands to know why he was fighting and threatens to take away Henry’s captain position if he doesn’t explain what happened. Henry refuses because he doesn’t want to embarrass Halle and leaves. Outside, he hears someone yelling and realizes it’s Halle.

Chapter 36 Summary: “Halle”

Halle goes to the arena with her friends to see the game. Her mom confronts her for not wearing Will’s jersey and failing to support him. Halle bursts out in frustration. She explains how bad Will was to her and insists that Mom puts too much pressure on her to take care of the family. Mom eventually realizes how hurt Halle is and comforts her.

Henry emerges from the locker room and he and Halle leave the arena. Back at home, Henry tells Halle what happened with Will. They have sex. Afterward, Halle urges Henry to tell Coach what happened even if he doesn’t want to be captain anymore. Henry explains that he needs some time to himself when he feels like this and is going to spend a few days with his moms. He promises to come back to Halle when he feels better. Halle wishes she could fix how he’s feeling but agrees to give him space.

Chapter 37 Summary: “Halle”

Halle and Henry spend the next several weeks apart. One day. Anastasia stops over at Halle’s house looking for Henry. Halle explains the situation and Anastasia expresses how guilty she feels for not being there for Henry throughout the semester.

After Anastasia leaves, Halle sits alone worrying about Henry and wishing she were with him. She keeps thinking about the nasty things Will said about her and Henry. She wonders if Henry and his friends will get tired of her and if Henry actually needs her.

Halle’s friends drop by for a surprise visit. She explains everything that’s been going on and they assure her that they’re not tired of her and are there to support her. She also admits that she’s worried about finishing her novel, as the deadline is approaching and she’s been distracted. The friends offer to help her. Halle realizes how lucky she is to have them as they work together on her project that evening.

When Henry admits that he doesn’t want to be captain, they assure him it’s okay. That evening, his friends take him out for dinner and remind him they’re all there for him.

Henry meets with Coach. Coach apologizes for getting upset with him before the game and Henry reveals that he wants to step down as captain. Coach encourages him and gives him a list of things to do to catch up on in school and practice.

Halle and her friends finish and submit Halle’s book. Afterward, they meet up for lunch before leaving on their respective trips. After lunch, Halle comes home to find Henry waiting for her. Inside, Henry gives her an envelope and tells her to look for an email from him that goes with the gift. They say goodbye before leaving for spring break.

Halle cries on the way to the airport. While waiting in the security line, she receives Henry’s email, which contains an audio file. Then they say goodbye again: Halle canceled her family vacation to go away with her girlfriends instead. Before leaving, Halle notices the canvas she and Henry made hanging over his bed.

Epilogue Summary: “Halle”

Three months later, Halle hangs out with Henry and her friends and waits to hear back about the writing competition. Finally they open the email, and Halle discovers she’s only a runner-up.

Grayson arrives and takes Halle outside. He tells her that he and Mom agreed to pay for her to take the writing course in New York if she didn’t win the contest. He’s been living on the East Coast and wants her and Henry to spend the summer in his apartment while he looks for new housing out West.

Henry joins them and reveals that he’s going to take art classes in the city for the summer. Halle is thrilled. She and Henry make plans to celebrate together that night. They tell each other they love each other and kiss.

Chapter 31-Epilogue Analysis

In the novel’s final chapters, Henry and Halle continue to overcome The Challenges of Personal Development and solidify their mutual, loving partnership. These final narrative sequences depict Halle and Henry taking more active control over their lives. Their actions illustrate their work to claim who they are, to defend their personal needs, and to fight for what they want. Examples of these dynamics include Halle’s decision to open up to her mom about her frustrations with her mom’s interference and Henry’s decision to open up to Coach about not wanting to be team captain. In both contexts, Halle and Henry are asserting their desires instead of feeling pressured to conform to other people’s expectations, which marks a significant development in their character arcs. In talking to her mom, Halle is asking to be seen and respected by her family as an individual for the first time. In talking to Coach, Henry is acknowledging that he cannot always fulfill someone else’s expectations. Therefore, Halle and Henry both discover how to ask for help and to draw better boundaries by being honest with themselves and others.

The time that Halle and Henry spend apart both reminds them of The Importance of Friendship. During their month of silence, Halle becomes especially worried “that Henry [will] get bored of [her]” (383), and that she will in turn lose all the friends she’s made through Henry throughout the school year. She is pleasantly surprised when her friends drop by unannounced simply to spend time with her and make sure that she’s alright. The scenes from Chapter 37, in which Halle and her friends hang out, chat, drink wine, and work on Halle’s book together, capture the empowering and stabilizing nature of these connections.

The same is true of the scenes from Chapter 38, in which Henry’s friends make concerted efforts to invest in Henry’s life and to usher him out of his despair and toward renewal. In just a few short hours, the time Henry spends with his friends makes him feel that his life is “back on track” (397). Henry and Halle are learning that, although they want to support one another, they also need to preserve their other friendships to maintain balance in their relationship and their individual lives. These experiences and subsequent lessons ultimately make Henry and Halle stronger both as individuals and as a couple.

Throughout the novel, Henry and Halle’s dynamic has evolved from a close friendship into a heated romance, reflecting The Transformative Power of Love. This transformative power becomes especially apparent when Henry and Halle spend a long time apart for the first time since they met, which helps them realize how much they mean to one another. Their respective and overlapping conflicts with Will act as the narrative climax, leading Henry and Halle to a crucial turning point in their relationship. Will is the antagonist who disrupts Henry and Halle’s otherwise idyllic dynamic, once again serving as a foil to Henry: While Henry has consistently nurtured Halle’s confidence and respected her needs and goals, Will tries to reassert his control over Halle through shaming and bullying her. In confronting Will and decisively rejecting him, Halle reinforces her personal growth while committing in a new way to her healthier, developing dynamic with Henry instead.

The Epilogue gives Halle and Henry’s story a redemptive and hopeful ending. Although Halle doesn’t win the writing competition, she does feel proud of herself for “finish[ing] a freaking book” and doing “something for [her]self” (401). Furthermore, the results of the writing competition usher in a new phase for Halle and Henry. Grayson steps into the eldest sibling role for the first time by offering his sister and her boyfriend the opportunity to further their relationship and their dreams by traveling to New York City. These closing plot points gesture toward the characters’ future as a couple and as individuals, suggesting that they will continue pursuing both their artistic goals and their relationship together.
