The nature camp that Raj attends is one of the main settings of the novel, and it represents The Differences between Animals and Humans and allows Raj’s inner development to progress. At first, Raj is afraid of starting a new life in a new place, and this fear is compounded by the fact that Oregon is so different from his former home in New York City. In New York, Raj was distanced from nature and surrounded by city life, some of which didn’t even require him to leave his apartment building. In Oregon, his family’s house has a large yard, and Raj is forced to go outside much more often. This compels Raj to grow accustomed to the natural world, and the camp increases his exposure by further separating him from civilization. Thus, the camp represents the need for Raj to come to terms with his new environment. By facing his fears at camp, Raj becomes braver and finds ways to make new friends.

The biggest component of nature camp is Survival Night, which represents the importance of Embracing Challenges to Achieve Growth. Though Raj has been forced to take risks and have new experiences at camp before this event, the long night in the woods represents the biggest challenge that Raj has ever faced.
